Starting a family is one of the most life-changing experiences you can go through. Every single persons journey and challenges are unique - add to that everything we hear (thanks society) about trying to navigate a career after maternity leave, and it’s clear why so many women feel overwhelmed. Despite the societal push for gender equality, we’re still up against systemic hurdles—the proverbial glass ceiling, societal expectations, and the persistent inequalities in workplace support for parents.
Now imagine this: you take a year out of your career to embrace your new role as a mother. Your identity transforms entirely, your life revolves around this tiny human, and sleep deprivation becomes your new normal (these are all things I never knew before I became a parent and went on this wild journey!). Then, you step back into an organisation that is likely to have changed. Changes in people and teams, in strategy, or clients during your absence. And in my experience businesses often assume we can step straight back in and there is little support offered.
This lack of support can lead to challenges like diminished confidence, a recent report showing that less than 1 in 5 women returned from maternity leave with confidence. It can cause uncertainty about reintegrating into the workplace, and the ever-present struggle of balancing work and family life. And let's be honest: by the time you get home in the evening, get through the mental load, get the children in bed etc it’s hard to even have a conversation let alone figure out how to articulate your needs to your leader.

Top Tips for Returning to Work After Maternity Leave
After working with hundreds of women in this space, here are my top five pieces of advice to help you navigate the transition:
Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Returning to work after maternity leave is a significant transition, and it’s okay not to have everything figured out immediately. Treat yourself with the same compassion you would a friend.
Prioritise Your Well-Being:Taking care of your mental and physical health isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Make time for activities you enjoy, whether it’s exercising, listening to a podcast on your commute, or simply taking a few minutes to recharge. When you prioritise your well-being, you’re better equipped to show up for both your career and your family, plus you are building resilience which all working parents need!
Set Clear Expectations: Get clarity on what’s expected of you at work and build a plan for home during your first three months back. If the workplace has changed, allow yourself time to adjust. Be transparent with your manager about what you need to transition effectively and agree on realistic goals for resuming responsibilities.
Get Clear on Your Return-to-Work Plan: Have a detailed conversation with your leader to map out your return. What do you need to know? Who should you meet? How will you get back up to speed on projects? If you had a maternity cover, plan a smooth transition with them and ensure this is communicated clearly to you, them, and the wider business if necessary.
Celebrate the Wins—Big and Small: Acknowledge every achievement, no matter how minor it may seem. I remember a time when I couldn’t manage a shower until the end of the day. That felt like a win, and it was okay—celebrate that! Recognising your progress helps to keep you motivated and focused.
